Extending Mindfulness Beyond Massage Sessions

We've been dreaming about this for a while: how do we bring a little piece of that calm from our treatment room into your home? Without the pressure. Without asking you to sign up for anything or overload your shelves with oils you didn't choose. Because here's the thing—we know our community. Some of you are oil enthusiasts already; others have never used them. We couldn't build this on "extra income" when our gut instinct is always "no pressure, no strings."

So we asked ourselves a different question: How do we help you feel a little bit of happiness—without breaking the bank?

The answer? An Essential Oils Add-On Club that meets you exactly where you are.

These oils aren't about transformation overnight. They're about tiny moments of presence. A few seconds of inhaling a scent. A pause. A breath. That's self-awareness in action. And here's what we've noticed: the more you lean into these little moments—a morning roller application, a quick mist of linen spray on your pillow, five seconds with a diffuser blend—the more you tune in to yourself. You notice tight spots earlier. You catch aches before they become problems. You get those precious "ahhh" moments throughout your day. (And if you're a mom of all boys, you know those moments are everything.) It's not about doing more. It's about pausing. Reconnecting. Slowing down. A mindfulness moment isn't complicated; it's just you, your gift, and a few seconds of presence. And the magic? It keeps working long after the scent fades.

Why Oils Matter — The "Why" Behind the Club

At Inner Roots, oils aren't a gimmick or an upsell. They're a complement to the work we do together. When you're on our table, we're helping your body release tension, restore mobility, and reconnect with itself. Oils extend that work into your everyday life—they're like a little ambassador from our treatment room that lives in your home.

           How We Use Oils Here

Walk into our space and you might smell any number of relaxing or seasonal blends. Our office has become a favorite of the entire building. Neighbors say they can smell it around the corner! Some clients love the scent; it signals relaxation and allows them to fully "play dead" on the table. Others feel the effects within 20 minutes—genuine relief. We keep Lavender, Rose, a massage blend, Eucalyptus, and other oils on hand. Different oils work differently for different bodies, and that's the beauty of it. Your nervous system might respond to one blend while your friend responds to another.

           The Magic of Scent

Here's something we've learned: you can't experience an essential oil the way you experience a pill. You have to smell it. There's no rushing. When you inhale an oil, scent molecules travel directly to your brain's limbic system—the part that handles emotion, memory, and mood. You don't just catch a whiff; most people naturally take multiple long sniffs. Those three, four, five intentional breaths? That's a true pause happening without you having to do anything.

Scent is powerful that way. It stops you in your tracks. It makes you present. Research shows that positive olfactory stimuli—pleasant scents—can regulate your emotions and trigger genuine physiological responses. Your body doesn't know the difference between intentional breathing and aromatherapy; it just knows it feels calmer. Over time, something shifts. The more you pause for oils, the more you train your brain to be attuned to other things. You become aware. You notice tension earlier. You catch tight spots before they become problems. You communicate better during your sessions because you're already tuned in to what your body is telling you.

           Our Philosophy: It's Your Choice

Now, let's talk safety—because it matters.

We're not aromatherapists, and we don't claim expertise in treating pain with oils. But there's solid science behind their use, and most people genuinely enjoy a good scent. If a blend helps us work more effectively while keeping you comfortable? We're here for it. That said, your body, your choice.

           Here are our guidelines:

Never apply oils near your eyes, ears, or sensitive personal areas. Be cautious on your face—some oils can feel a bit burny on sensitive skin, even diluted. Some oils can be applied "neat" (without dilution) if you're experienced with them. Generally, essential oils are safe, but if you want to use them more frequently or take them internally, you should talk to our partner, Colleen Lynch-Harshmann at Essential Integration Wellness. She's the expert, and she'll guide you safely.

We'll never pressure you to use anything you're uncomfortable with. Ask questions. Be aware of your own body. That's not just our philosophy with oils—that's our philosophy with everything we do here.

How the Add-On Club Works — The Practical Details

Here's the beautiful part: there's no separate sign-up. No new form. No extra hoops. As an Inner Roots Self Care Member, you already experience oils on the table.

           Inner Roots' Self-Care+

at just $10 more than our traditional membership, it unlocks two things: all the customized oils you want during your massage sessions plus the ability to take home a curated item each month.

           Zero Pressure. Maximum Flexibility.

We know life happens. Memberships can be paused or cancelled anytime—no fees, no guilt. And here's the cool part: you don't have to finish one item before you grab another. Still working through half a bottle of linen spray? No problem. Grab that rollerball next visit. Use them simultaneously. Mix and match. This is your self-care routine, not ours.

           Choosing Your Item

When you come in, your therapist will walk you over to our white cube display and show you what's available. We maintain a selection of staple blends—the ones we know work well for most bodies—plus seasonal additions that rotate throughout the year. Our menu is growing, and we're always collaborating with Colleen Lynch-Harshmann at Essential Integration Wellness (she knows what works beautifully together) and our own Jeanette (who, let's be honest, just loves a fantastic smelling bottle).

More Than Just a Monthly Item

We're also planning workshops where you can make your own blends, special events, and fun nights out—all centered around oils and self-care. Think of the Add-On Club as a doorway into a whole world of possibility, not just a one-time grab-and-go.

           Who This Is For

This club is perfect for anyone who wants to explore oils more deeply but isn't ready to commit to the triple-dollar price tag of a full bottle. (Have you seen essential oil prices at Whole Foods? Yikes.) It's ideal if you're curious but don't know where to start, or if you want to try different blends before investing in your own collection.

It's also perfect for folks who don't use oils themselves but have a partner, kiddo, or friend who does. You're not in charge of what happens to your gift—they are. (And honestly, if you love the bottle so much you want to keep it? Go ahead. Just refill it with your own lovely scent and keep the magic going.)

Is There Someone This Isn't Right For?

Not really. But if you have a complicated medical history or a severe diagnosis, we'd love to connect you with Colleen Lynch-Harshmann first. She can answer specific questions and make sure oils are a good fit for you.

           Skeptical About Oils?

Talk to us. We get it. There's a lot of noise and nonsense out there, especially on social media. You don't know what you don't know, and that's completely normal. Our message remains the same: try it if you feel comfortable. If you don't? No problem. Skip the Self-Care+ upgrade and just enjoy your massage at our base membership level. Zero judgment.

How We Source & How You Can Help

We source all our oils from doTerra. Both Colleen and Jeanette are Wellness Advocates for the brand, and we've chosen them because of their rigorous testing, batch consistency, and mission. Yes, we're aware there are opinions about MLMs—we have them too. But we're not pushy, and we absolutely don't discourage you from using other local or national brands. Your body, your choice.

What does matter to us is sustainability and keeping costs low for everyone. Our bottles? They're cleaned, sanitized empties—roller bottles, dropper bottles, glass containers from cosmetics companies. We use Oui yogurt containers for our sugar scrubs. Any glass container 8oz and below works beautifully for holding essential oil gifts.

And here's where you come in: we accept glass donations. Keep your empties. Cosmetics jars, perfume bottles, dropper bottles—anything glass that's easy to clean. When in doubt, throw it in the bag. We'll use what works and responsibly dispose of what doesn't. Your donations help us create more gift variations while keeping costs low for everyone. Plus, seeing how we do it might spark ideas for personalizing gifts for your own family down the road. More mindfulness everywhere.

Donations are accepted anytime—just drop them in one of the drawers outside our suite door or pop them on the desk in the waiting room. We don't mind visitors! Enjoy your oils-enjoy your mindfulness.

Year-End Madness: Why It Feels Like Chaos (and How We Can Break the Cycle)

As the holiday frenzy peaks, service-based business owners face the same old end-of-year reckoning. Here’s how to reset your approach, reclaim your time, and stop dreading your own “annual review.”

It’s Not the Holidays—It’s the Pattern

Level with me: the end of the year is wild—not just because of the holidays, but because it shines a spotlight on every crack in our business systems. Whether you’ve prepped all year or got blindsided again, this season has a way of magnifying what’s working... and what desperately isn’t.

For solo business owners, it’s more than finding new clients, keeping current ones or surviving another “promo season.” It’s "Where am I headed?", "Should I raise my prices?", and "How come everyone else makes it look so easy?" Maybe you’ve already started picking apart your books, feeling the urge to shake up your offers, or just wishing you could call a time-out.

I’ve been there—three years in a row once—and can confirm: You don’t have to live in rinse-and-repeat chaos. Let’s tackle three big stressors head-on, with real strategies you can use.

           1. The Eternal Pricing Tug-of-War

Why does raising rates feel like a thunderstorm on the horizon?

As service providers, there’s always that gut-clench when we think about upping prices. We picture clients grumbling, worry about being “fair,” and sometimes talk ourselves out of it before starting. The wild thing is, most people expect cost-of-living bumps. What they don’t like?

Sudden changes with no explanation or added value.

The fix: Give yourself permission, but anchor it in a plan.

            Labor is a cost.

If you do the work—and especially if you wear all the hats—you deserve incremental growth. If you were an employee that obtained a new certification, or took on more administrative duties, you'd ask for a raise, right?

Communicate shifts clearly. Even “I need to make more” is valid when put in the correct context. Be honest and be specific while also respecting your right to keep private information, private. (Less is more, simple is better-remember that.)

Map your changes in advance. Show your professionalism by establishing an organized and consistent communication tactic. Small bits of information at regular intervals, are more digestible than a two page email. The style of visual and its consistency are key here, too.

           2. Time Management: Are We Booking Ourselves Into Burnout?

End of year = maximum overbook mode. We squeeze in those “just one more” appointments or projects… right alongside family, year-end paperwork, and attempts at festivity. And let’s be brutally honest: half those bookings don’t even feel worth the hustle in hindsight.

Here’s how to get off the hamster wheel:

Track your busy/slow months now, not later. Even a sticky note tally helps.

Consider a “seasonal schedule.” Who says your hours must be set in stone? Take full advantage of slow spells, recharge when you can, and prepare your schedule for busier times.

            Recovery isn’t a luxury.

Overbooking leaves no time to breathe, rest and unplug. If you need me to insert more filler to convince you that your wellness routine comes first, send me a text. I have no problems reminding you of just how important you are.

           3. Add, Add, Add—Wait, Do We Need to?

The urge to “freshen up” our offers or chase something shiny is REAL at year’s end. I used to announce new workshops, cute inclusions and all sorts of things that barely made a blip. Most of it? Unnecessary stress, extra work and late nights.

You don’t need to keep inventing—sometimes “more” is just busywork.

Do a gut check: is this new thing for you, for your clients, or just to keep up with the Joneses?

It’s okay for your evolution this year to be about simplifying—not expanding. Where does your business or work efforts feel complicated? List them, take a breath-walk away from the list. Come back to it after a few days of letting it flutter out in the universe.

An honest simple money or schedule review counts. That’s real growth, too. The great part is, you don't really have to decide anything AFTER you find the results! You could just sit there and say "Okay... I'm aware of that." Just because SOMEONE may tell you that it's a problem, doesn't mean it's actually a problem.

Give Yourself Grace—And Fix the Root, Not Just the Rush

If there’s one pattern that’s doomed to repeat, it’s tackling the symptoms and ignoring the system. Use this season’s chaos as your signal. Pause. Patch the holes. Set one or two clear intentions now, and let the rest wait. Give yourself time to sit with the awareness of what's not working, before you quickly tackle the solution. Give yourself credit for what IS working.

           Soon enough—you’ll thank yourself.

The Holiday Hustle: Why Awareness Slips Away

Let’s be honest—between Halloween, Thanksgiving, Christmas, and New Year’s, most of us are running on autopilot. It’s perfectly normal to feel like your brain (and body) barely has time to catch up, let alone savor the moment or set a truly mindful intention.

But what if—amid the sweets, sales, and shiny resolutions—we pressed pause long enough to notice how we really feel? Awareness isn’t just a spiritual buzzword; it’s the starting line for any real, lasting change. In fact, in Ayurveda (the ancient science of life), everything—from healing to healthy habit-building—begins with awareness.

Beyond the Hype: The Energetic Meaning of “New Year”

Everywhere you look, there are reminders to “start fresh”—new gym signups, discounted yoga classes, even your grocery aisle “health reset.” And though, yes, you can change habits any time, there’s a special power in this collective surge. The turning of the year brings an energetic invitation for what Ayurveda calls rebirth or renewal—a time when nature slows, bodies crave routine, and our minds are hungry for reflection.

Think of the “New Year” less as a grand performance and more like spring-cleaning for your soul. It’s about noticing the old patterns (mental or physical), letting go of what doesn’t serve, and choosing one nourishing new practice you’ll truly stick with.

           Ayurvedic Insights for Seasonal Awareness

Honor the Season’s Energy: Winter is a time to restore, not overextend. Ayurveda encourages slowing down, prioritizing warmth, sleep, and gentle movement.

Routine is Ritual: Daily routines—what Ayurveda calls “dinacharya”—anchor us in the present, making us less reactive to seasonal stressors.

Digest What You Take In: Not just food! Take time to process emotions, experiences, and even those extra family gatherings.

Modern science echoes what old traditions teach: our bodies remember everything—from posture at work, to movement in workouts, to how we hold stress. When we move out of awareness (think: holiday chaos or flurries of resolutions) we risk falling into old postural habits, muscle imbalances, or even injury.

Kinetic Chain Wisdom: No single muscle or joint operates alone. What happens at your feet affects your back, neck, and even your mental state! Small, mindful changes—better posture, more movement variety, regular bodywork—add up to real renewal [from "Kinetic Chains"].

Massage as Reset: Regular massage helps us tune in, break free from “autopilot” movement and stress, and restore natural balance.

Let’s cut through the Instagram noise: you don’t need to overhaul your entire life on January 1st. Studies and traditional wisdom agree: lasting change sticks when it starts with awareness, is anchored in routine, and honors your real needs—mind, body, and soul.

How to Harness the Spark (Without the Burnout):

           1. Tune In First: Before making resolutions, pause. Notice how your body feels, your stress levels, your cravings for connection or rest.

           2. Start Small and Real: Pick one habit, not five. Maybe ten minutes of stretching, a weekly massage, or daily deep breaths. Micro-changes add up.

           3. Use Collective Energy: Let the “reset” energy of the season motivate you, but do it on your terms. Buddy up with friends, join a wellness challenge, or simply tell someone your goal.

           4. Reflect and Adjust: Regularly check in with yourself: Is this working? Do you feel better? If not, tweak gently. Renewal isn’t all-or-nothing.

           Set aside 5 minutes—yes, really!

Take three slow breaths, feeling your body on the chair or floor.

Ask yourself: What do I actually need—rest, movement, connection?

Do it immediately, or plan the time for it.

As the holidays sweep us along, it’s easy to lose sight of what our bodies and minds truly need. This blog reminds us that meaningful routines and new beginnings aren’t found in hype or quick fixes, but in gentle awareness and small, mindful changes. By noticing our patterns—both mental and physical—and tuning into how holiday habits ripple through our body’s interconnected systems, we can break free from autopilot and return to balance. Science and best practices show that by integrating restorative routines, listening to our movement (kinetic chain) needs, and embracing supportive self-care like massage, lasting change is gently built, not willed into being overnight. If you're ready for a massage routine to help you tune-in to your body, click "Start Now" below. Regardless of what you decide to change, adjust or revamp- start small, stay connected to yourself and others, and let this season’s energy help you grow into your healthiest self—one mindful step at a time.

Prenatal massage is more than just a physical treatment—it’s a nurturing practice designed to support both your body and your emotional well-being during pregnancy. At Inner Roots, we combine expert techniques with genuine care to help relieve the aches and tensions of pregnancy while maintaining overall balance. With the guidance of our certified therapist, Victoria, each session is adapted to meet your unique needs on that very day.

Once your first appointment is booked, you’ll receive an intake questionnaire to gather detailed information about your overall health and the specific experiences of your pregnancy. Victoria will use your responses to ask any additional questions, ensuring she understands your needs fully—from common discomforts like nausea and weakness to severe pain or energy shifts. This tailored approach allows her to design a session that truly caters to your body’s needs.

During your session, you can expect communication: Victoria may check in about the pressure and even adjust pillows or positioning to guarantee your maximum comfort. Professionalism is also paramount: all personal areas are kept covered, and Victoria carefully undrapes only the areas she is working on at a given moment. Our goal is to make sure that you experience a nurturing massage, curated to your liking so that you can zone out into relaxation.

           Session Types and Techniques

We offer two session lengths—75 minutes and 90 minutes—each designed to address the unique challenges of pregnancy.

           75-Minute Session:

This represents the essential minimum duration. It is ideal for addressing focused areas of discomfort but may not cover the full body. This is perfect for those who may not have severe pain or discomfort yet still need overall balance and rejuvenation.

           90-Minute Session:

This extended session allows for a comprehensive treatment without feeling rushed, ensuring that you receive a full-body massage experience. 90-Minutes is ideal for those whose body may be in severe pain, or folks who feel every week brings a different ailment.

Both session types include a range of effective techniques. Victoria incorporates methods such as Swedish massage to improve circulation, deep tissue work to tackle more stubborn muscle tension, and gua sha for targeted relief in tendinous areas. Essential oils may be integrated as well to enhance relaxation, while cupping therapy might be used as an adjunct spot treatment. The use of hot stones and towels further enhances the soothing nature of the session. Not every technique is used in every session; instead, they are selected based on your symptoms and preferences for that day.

Committing to Your Safety and Wellness

Safety is at the core of every prenatal massage we provide. Victoria’s comprehensive education and certification in prenatal massage ensure that each session is carried out with the utmost care. She always discusses any new or existing diagnoses, medications, or points of pain with you before beginning the session. It’s not just one body we’re treating- indirectly we are affecting two- and we want both mom and baby to be safe. This collaborative approach means that each massage is not only effective in relieving physical discomfort but is also administered in a trustworthy, reassuring environment.

We emphasize transparency and trust, because your pregnancy may bring some emotional or spiritual aspects. Massage therapy is effective at helping to quiet the mind and soul, helping you to relax even more during your massage. Before every session, you have the opportunity to share any changes in your condition—be it a fluctuation in energy levels, mood swings, or other symptoms. This ongoing dialogue ensures that your massage stays aligned with your body’s evolving needs, keeping you balanced and comfortable throughout your pregnancy journey.

           Maintaining Balance During Pregnancy

Pregnancy is a time of profound change, and while rest and reduced physical activity are crucial, gentle, targeted massage therapy can accelerate your journey towards wellness. Regular sessions are an integral part of maintaining balance amid bodily changes. With every massage, you gain not only relief from physical tension but also a boost in emotional well-being. Our goal is to make self-care a seamless part of your routine, providing you with a safe, nurturing space to unwind and embrace the transformative experience of pregnancy.

Important Note: Before booking your appointment, we advise every client to consult with their doctor about prenatal massage therapy to ensure it is right for their particular situation.

The Reality of Being a Solo Therapist

Being a solo therapist comes with unique challenges that aren't always addressed in traditional networking or business groups. The emotional toll of supporting others, the burden of running a business alone, and the struggle to maintain work-life balance can feel overwhelming. I know this firsthand because I’ve been there. For eight years, I navigated moments of doubt—juggling administrative tasks, client care, and personal responsibilities while wondering how I could possibly keep up. The truth is, many therapists feel isolated in their work, even though we spend our days deeply connected to others.

My Journey: From Struggle to Stability

I graduated from Pittsburgh School of Massage Therapy in October 2015. After bouncing between my uncle’s practice and a chiropractor’s office, I eventually settled in Wexford, taking over an existing therapist’s clientele and space while she had her second baby. I ran a Groupon promotion, and in less than a year, my schedule was packed.

I never consistently marketed myself. I didn’t offer free massages at gyms, I didn’t plaster my business cards everywhere, and I certainly didn’t join any free or paid networking groups. I simply rented a space and went with it. My connections came from random opportunities, my decision-making was mostly based on common sense, and my financial management… well, let’s just say I made my fair share of mistakes—but I'm still here and thriving.

At the same time, I was dealing with personal challenges while trying to improve my health. It took eight years, but I finally reached a place where I had the space, time, energy, and financial stability to grow. I’ve taken everything I learned—the successes, the failures, the lessons—and applied it to create a career and life that make me happy.

Now, I want to share that knowledge with you, learn with you as I grow, and help you grow. I want to help you avoid some of the challenges I faced, spark new ideas for your own practice, and create a space where we can celebrate even the smallest wins together. And, perhaps most importantly, I want us all to be prepared for whatever comes next (because I never thought I’d have to plan for a global shutdown.)

The Missing Support: Why This Call Exists

Therapists often don’t have a structured space to discuss the real struggles of balancing business, personal life, and self-care. While business networking groups exist, they typically focus on client acquisition or financial growth, ignoring the human side of running a practice.

Sure, you can hire a business coach, but what I’ve witnessed (and personally experienced) is that many lack empathy for the realities of solo practice. I tried business coaching for three years, and while some ideas seemed brilliant, they quickly became too expensive and time-consuming to maintain—especially while keeping services affordable for you guys.

I wanted something different. The industry needed something different. A space where therapists could connect on a deeper level, share experiences, and support one another through both professional and personal challenges. This call was born out of that need—a community designed for those who understand what it means to be both a business owner and a healer.

           What Makes This Different?

This is not your typical networking group. It’s not about referrals, marketing strategies, or business hacks—though those topics may naturally come up. Unlike traditional networking groups that focus on exchanging leads, this space is about honest conversations, shared experiences, and genuine support.

With years of experience balancing my own practice, I understand the emotional exhaustion, decision fatigue, and constant juggling act that comes with being a therapist. Over time, I’ve built a trusted network of professionals, all of whom I rely on for accurate information and solid advice. This call provides a space where therapists can be real, be heard, and walk away feeling a little lighter. We will learn together, and figure out how the industry applies to each of us as individuals together, in a focused environment with digestible content.

If you’re a therapist who:

- Feels isolated in your practice and wants a sense of community

           - Wants a space to talk openly about both the emotional and business challenges of therapy

           - Needs support without a huge financial commitment

Referral Patterns and Trigger Points Explained

Pain isn't always where you think it is. Often, the discomfort you feel isn't the result of the problem's true location, but rather a phenomenon known as referral patterns. This occurs when pain originates from one area but is perceived in another, sometimes making it tricky to identify the root cause. Understanding and recognizing these patterns can help you communicate better with your therapist and lead to more effective treatment.

           What Are Referral Patterns?

Referral patterns occur when pain travels from its source to a different area of the body, often due to interconnected muscles, nerves, or joints. One common cause of this is trigger points—tight, irritable spots within muscle tissue. When these points become active, they can send pain to distant areas. For instance, a trigger point in the upper trapezius (shoulder muscle) might refer pain up into the head, causing a tension headache. Although the pain is felt in the head, the problem lies in the shoulder area. This disconnect shows how the location of pain may not always reveal its true cause.

Why Sharing Referral Patterns with Your Therapist Matters

Your therapist depends on the information you provide to understand how your body responds to pain. Referral patterns are important clues in this process. By describing not just where you feel pain, but also its behavior—such as whether it spreads, changes location, or varies with activity—you help your therapist pinpoint the root cause. For example, if you're experiencing lower back pain that worsens when bending and also notice discomfort radiating down your leg, this could point to an issue with a spinal nerve. Without this vital information, your therapist might focus on the back pain and miss the true problem. Clear communication makes treatment more targeted and effective.

           Common Causes of Referral Patterns

Referral patterns are usually the result of deeper issues within the body. Here are some of the most common causes:

            Trigger Points

: These tight, painful spots in muscles can form due to overuse, poor posture, or strain. While they might not always hurt directly, they can cause pain in other areas of the body.

            Nerve Compression

: When a nerve is compressed or irritated, it can send pain signals to areas it innervates. For example, sciatic nerve compression in the lower back can cause pain that radiates down the leg.

            Joint Dysfunction

: Misaligned joints can lead to muscle imbalances, triggering referred pain. For instance, a misaligned pelvis might lead to discomfort in the lower back or hips.

By addressing these underlying issues, therapists can help break the cycle of referral pain and promote healing.

           Final Thoughts

Referral patterns remind us that pain is not a simple, isolated experience. Understanding how pain moves through the body and communicating these patterns with your therapist can lead to more effective care. By identifying the root causes and addressing them, you can move from temporary relief to long-lasting solutions.

The Sneaky Side of Pain

Pain is a universal experience, but where you feel it is often only part of the story. To understand pain, it’s essential to think beyond the ache. Like a chain reaction, pain typically involves a cause, a response from surrounding structures, and potential consequences if left unresolved. Recognizing this dynamic can lead to more effective relief and better long-term results.

           Pain and the Chain Reaction

Pain often results from an initial issue that triggers a cascade of reactions in the body. Let’s explore three examples—chances are, one of them might resonate with you.

           Low Back

Do you sit for long periods at a desk or spend hours driving? Perhaps you feel like you’re always rushing around, often anxious. This type of low back pain might stem from tight hip flexors, which can pull the pelvis into a forward tilt, increasing strain on the lumbar spine. As the back compensates, other areas—such as the abdominal muscles or hamstrings—can become overstretched or weakened. This imbalance perpetuates discomfort and may lead to instability or chronic tension in surrounding areas.

           Neck: Front and Back

Tension in the neck may arise from poor posture, jaw clenching due to stress, or even prolonged eye strain. For instance, if you frequently crane your neck forward to look at a computer screen, the muscles at the back of the neck are forced to work overtime to support your head. Meanwhile, the muscles in the front of the neck shorten, often asymmetrically. This imbalance can tighten the chest muscles, further exacerbating the issue and creating strain across the upper back. Over time, the tension can radiate to the shoulder blades or cause headaches, spreading the problem well beyond its origin.

           Between the Shoulder Blades

Pain between the shoulder blades often illustrates how compensations evolve. While it might feel like an isolated knot, the true source could be tight pectoral muscles caused by habitual forward-shoulder posture or repetitive arm movements. These imbalances overwork the upper back muscles, forcing them to stabilize the shoulders. If left unaddressed, this can lead to chronic tightness or even nerve irritation.

Each of these examples highlights how one issue can trigger widespread effects, making it essential to address not just the pain itself, but the root cause.

A Closer Look at Trigger Points

Trigger points, or muscle knots, come in various types, each contributing to how pain develops and spreads. The can be primary or secondary, while also being active or latent. Understanding these classifications is vital for effective treatment:

            Primary (Central) Trigger Points

            :
Found in the belly of a muscle, these are the main culprits causing local pain and referred discomfort. For example, a trigger point in the trapezius muscle may lead to headaches or shoulder pain.

            Secondary (Satellite) Trigger Points

            :
These form in response to primary trigger points, often in nearby muscles. They usually resolve once the primary issue is addressed, making them secondary players in the pain puzzle.

            Active Trigger Points

            :
Active trigger points cause pain even without direct pressure and can reproduce familiar symptoms when pressed. They may also lead to symptoms like redness, sweating, or dizziness.

            Latent Trigger Points

            :
These only cause discomfort when pressed but can still disrupt muscle function by weakening the affected area or altering movement patterns.

Trigger point therapy relies on identifying and addressing these knots, particularly primary and active points. By deactivating them and restoring proper muscle function, therapists can alleviate referred pain and help prevent recurring issues.

           Final Thoughts

Pain is rarely as simple as it seems. It may start in one place, but its effects ripple outward, causing widespread discomfort and dysfunction. Understanding the interconnected nature of the body—whether it’s through identifying trigger points or addressing compensatory patterns—can lead to more effective treatments and lasting relief. If you’ve been dealing with persistent pain, don’t just focus on where it hurts; consider working with a professional to uncover the underlying causes. A comprehensive approach can improve your immediate symptoms and lay the foundation for long-term well-being.

Reduces Swelling: Prenatal massage can help reduce swelling in the joints, a common issue during pregnancy due to increased blood flow and pressure on blood vessels.

Reduces Sciatic Nerve Pain: The growing uterus can put pressure on muscles of the lower back and pelvic floor, causing pain along the sciatic nerve. Massage can relieve this pressure.

Prenatal massage should always be performed by a trained and certified prenatal massage therapist who understands the specific needs and precautions for pregnant women. We recommend that you speak with your doctor before starting a massage regimen during your pregnancy.

Heal Your Soul with Nature

The power of nature is unmeasurable, and long lasting.

Embrace your inner dirt digging child

Our soul. It's a very powerful influencer on the rest of our body and mind. If it is in crisis, or malnourished, we are in deep trouble. You've felt it, I know you have.

Let me tell you a story. A young lady I know has a very successful career as a CEO of a major national corporation. She was approved to work remote, travels frequently with all expenses paid, earns a great salary, and has no troubling relationships with friends or family. She expressed to me one day that there was something missing and in her words, "It's weird. I'm incredibly happy, and proud of where I am in life, but I feel a void, and I have not the slightest freaking clue where the void is." Grrrr... frustrating right? After some conversation, and a little introspective digging, she realized that she was just blowing by her surroundings and not really practicing the art of doing something by herself, that has seemingly no long term purpose.

Let's direct that a bit more: no long term purpose. Honestly, I get it. We are trained from little on up "if you work hard at school and get good grades you will have a good job" or maybe "if you play a sport, and practice hard you'll get a scholarship to a great university". It has been engrained in use that our choices affect our future, and for the most part this is true. For example, you may start working at a different company where the salary is higher, because you want to retire with security. No problem with that of course, but what if instead of thinking that far into the future, you start that same job because you ENJOY performing those tasks? Hmm? What if kids simply played sports to just ENJOY the sport, with no future plans at all? Interesting point of view on that, don't you think.

This young lady had realized that everything she chose had some long term purpose or outcome, and nothing, NOTHING she did was for "short term gratification" or what I like to call, enjoying the present just because. She was missing out on all the little things- smelling flowers, enjoying the sunshine, watching a dog run around in the yard- that though the joy provided may seem short lived, it nourishes your soul little by little.

The challenge here is how can we incorporate more of those little things in our lives, to nourish our soul little by little, instead of crashing headfirst into shutdown mode or worse, numb. Let's start off by channeling our inner child yes? Here are a couple things you can do by yourself, and I'm even going to give you several options incase one doesn't suit your fancy.

Plant something small: Find a pot. Find a small plant. Throw in some dirt. Do it with INTENTION, and enjoy doing it. Then stick it somewhere you go every day- office, home, outside- and when you see it, just admire its beauty, its ability to grow, the colors of the leaves, how each leaf or flower pops out.

Go digging in the dirt: If you have a shovel, great! If you don't, I always fancied my mom's good (and

expensive) kitchen utensils for digging. Tear something out- weeds, that old rusty post, that bush that you've hated trimming since day one. Really get your hands in the dirt, and feel it. Watch it fall through your fingertips. Make mud out of it and play with that in your hands. You'd be amazed at how much of a release you get when tearing something up. Bonus: whatever it is that your tearing up, associate it with any singular thing you want to remove from your life, and when you throw it out, really let it go with intention.

If you really are doubting your green thumb, how about just sitting outside somewhere nice? A park, your front porch, backyard, in a pool or hot tub? While you are sitting there, actually enjoy it. Don't think about anything else. This is also a great time to practice our 5 Senses exercise when you sense your mind wandering. Enjoy the sun, or even the beauty of the overcasting clouds. For that time, sit in quiet, and enjoy everything around you. Challenge yourself to see the beauty in something you didn't notice, or even something you've always thought was ugly.

Try one of those three things. Do it once per week. If you're starting to add up the plants you might have you can opt to take care of a small quantity, and use that time to intentionally water and care for it, instead of drowning it with a water can. Be present in the moment, and enjoy it.

Do things that make you truly happy, that seemingly have no long term purpose, simply because you enjoy doing them.

Feel like you're missing stuff? Guess what... you are.

The last time you received upsetting news, what did you do? Did your brain go a million miles an hour thinking 'What did I do to get here?" or maybe "How the heck am I going to fix this?" followed by most likely a whole train of thoughts until something happens and suddenly you are saying "okay... let's get back to emptying the dishwasher".

We call that "removal from the present" and while brainstorming is not a bad thing, it will not help us in this moment. Our body LOVES going into panic mode, and then starts processing the what-if's and how-to's faster than we can say "What the *$%#**&?!?!" If you'd like to release yourself from the roller coaster of over firing your brain, check out this video, and then put it into practice.
